NTFS to exFAT on Mac: questions answered

Short, direct answers. If something is missing, write to [email protected].

The basics

Can NTFS be converted to exFAT in place?

No. NTFS and exFAT use completely different on-disk structures, and neither macOS nor any tool can rewrite one into the other without moving the data. The safe route is back up, format, copy back.

Why exFAT and not APFS or FAT32?

exFAT is read and written natively by macOS and by modern versions of Windows and has no 4 GB file limit. FAT32 has a 4 GB per-file limit. APFS is excellent on Macs but Windows cannot read it without extra software.

Does macOS convert NTFS to exFAT by itself?

No. macOS can read NTFS but has no conversion feature. Disk Utility can erase a drive and format it as exFAT, but it does not move your files for you.

Do I need NTFSTool or another driver?

No. NTFS2exFAT reads the NTFS drive with macOS's built-in reader. A driver such as NTFSTool is useful only if you want to keep NTFS and write to it, or to double-check drives that were written by Mac or Linux NTFS drivers.

Safety

Will I lose files?

The app is built so that you find out before anything is erased. It refuses to format until every backup file has been read back and matches its SHA-256 checksum, and it asks you to type the drive name. Keep the backup until you are satisfied.

What if the power fails during the process?

Before the format step your drive is untouched. The manifest lets the app resume the backup. If the format was interrupted, the app recognises it on the next start and continues from the verified backup.

What if I choose the wrong drive?

Only external NTFS drives are offered. The format command is tied to the exact volume that was backed up, and before formatting the app checks that it is still the same drive. You also have to type its name.

Can the backup be on the same drive?

No. The app refuses a backup location on the drive that would be erased.

Are there files it cannot protect?

Yes: files whose names Windows does not allow can be hidden or renamed by macOS's built-in NTFS reader before the app sees them. This only occurs on drives written by Mac or Linux NTFS drivers. See the limits section on the overview page.

Space and time

How much free space do I need?

Enough for a full backup of the files on the drive plus a small margin, on another drive or on your Mac. The app checks this before it starts.

How long does it take?

It depends on your drives and cable. The data is read and written about four times in total (copy, verify, restore, verify), so plan for roughly four passes over your data.

Can I pause?

Yes. You can pause at any time and resume later, even after quitting the app.

Why is exFAT space use sometimes higher?

exFAT allocates space in clusters. A drive with very many tiny files can use noticeably more space than on NTFS.

Compatibility

Which Macs and macOS versions are supported?

macOS 13 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Does it work with BitLocker, Boot Camp or system drives?

No. BitLocker drives, internal and system disks and Boot Camp partitions are not supported.

Will Windows read the converted drive?

exFAT is supported natively by modern versions of Windows. Eject the drive properly before unplugging it, because exFAT has no journal.

What about symbolic links and macOS metadata?

Symbolic links and junctions are not copied (exFAT has none). Files named ._* hold macOS extended attributes such as Finder tags; they are copied and macOS merges them back on exFAT, but they cannot be byte-verified.

Price, privacy and source

Is it free?

The current beta is free. Any future paid version will be announced on this site.

Does it upload my files or file names?

No file data leaves your Mac. Anonymous usage counts can be switched off in Settings and never include file names, paths or drive names.

Is it open source?

The conversion engine and the command-line tool are open source under the MIT license on GitHub. The Mac app is distributed as a signed and notarized binary.

How do I report a problem?

Open an issue on GitHub or write to [email protected]. Please include the report file saved next to your backup.
